Chairperson Teen Splash Sub-committee

Carnival Greetings to all!  This year, our Carnival's 50th Anniversary Celebrations will be filled with golden memories for both you and each of the Teen Splash contestants; where each teen will be "going for the gold".

Our theme: "Reflecting on the Past, Anticipating the Future" is an indication of the excitement that will take place on the night of the show as preparations have been heightened, in anticipation of Antigua's Carnival 2007, the World's Greatest Summer Festival.

This year, our ten golden teens will dazzle you with the many talents they possess.  I urge you to take some time and view these brilliant teens' biographies and photos as they each extend a personal invitation to you on Wednesday July 31st at 8:00 pm at Carnival City to be a part of the excitement that has been planned.

I would like to express my sincerest thanks to the creative and innovative team behind the production of Teen Splash; Wendy Josiah, Ivy Hurst, Cynthia Charles, Phil George and Gilbert Laudat, who have been instrumental in taking the Teen Splash to a higher lever over the past two years.

Here's wishing you a safe and fun filled Carnival 2K7.

Donald Johnson
St. Joseph's Academy

I appeared timidly on planet earth on August 18, 1989. An Antiguan citizen by naturalization, I am the first of three children. I am the older brother to little brother Fabian and sister Reynelda but my adopted sister Amanda is older than I. With brown eyes, black hair and a very friendly disposition, I grew into a muscularly built young man who now stands at 5 feet 8 inches. I am very funny at times and fun to be around. I say no to drugs and drinking since I know that they can both be detrimental to my health. However, I have a weakness for macaroni and cheese and my special favourite - cheese cake.

A proud prefect and student of what I consider to be one of the best schools in Antigua - St. Joseph's Academy - last year in form 4 I sat and passed English A, mathematics, Principles of Accounts and Spanish at the basic proficiency level. This year I am preparing to take eight subjects at CXC. My favourite subjects are Mathematics, Information Technology, Music, which I attend out of school, and physics. I plan to one day become a game designer/computer technician and also a professional musician. My hobbies reflect my interest in both these fields as I enjoy playing computer and video games and I play several musical instruments - the piano, the steel pan, the recorder, the bass guitar, the congo/ djembe drum, the drum set and marching drums. I especially enjoy playing the electronic keyboard.

I attend the Holy Family Cathedral at Michaels Mount. At youth Sunday mass, I play either the pan, drum set or the piano; I also sing occasionally. Every first and third Sunday in the month, I play for mass which is temporarily being held at the Green Bay Primary school at Donavans. In some of my spare time I practice on the keyboard, and I play the piano at the St. Vincent de Paul Day Care Centre for the Elderly. One of my biggest joys is the smiles on the faces of the older folks as they sway and hum to the "oldie goldie" tunes and hymns.

There are several people who have influenced my life.
My MOM - Without her I do not know where I would be right now. My ability to prepare a meal, clean the house, and do my laundry, tasks most men cannot do, were taught to me by my mother. She also taught me to display proper manners and respect towards the elderly, and especially towards females. She is the driving force behind all my achievements.

My Aunt - She brought me up to be punctual, to pay attention to the way I dress, talk and carry myself and to show etiquette at all times. She told me when I do something, I should always do it to the best of my ability; I should always put my best foot forward.

Bernard 'Buntart' Duplessis (my pan teacher) - I admire him because of his ability to play several more instruments than I can play. He takes life one day at a time, always cheerful and energetic. With a very funny and helpful personality, he encourages me to play and practice the piano, so that in the future I will be one of the best. Although he tells me to master one instrument at a time, it is hard for me to do so because my love for music is too strong.

My philosophy in life is, "Always help those in need and live life to the fullest, taking one day at a time."

Teia O'Garro
Antigua & Barbuda Institute of Continuing Studies

Born under the 'most exotic' zodiac sign of Taurus on April 28, 1989 was I eighteen year old Teia O'Garro in the village of All Saint's and I am the second child of three for Joy-Marie Alphonso and Vernon O'Garro.  That is where my journey began and I blossomed into an intelligent ambitious and caring young lady.

My Educational foundation was well set as I Graduated from the Liberta Primary School where I represented my institution in a reading competition and was victorious over all participants.

I then went on to the All Saints Secondary school after being successful in the Post Primary Examinations.  It was there that I saw the opportunity to participate in the annual Black History Month Pageant where I was awarded the second runner up position and the best performing talent.

I decided to attend Antigua & Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education where I am currently working on my high school diploma and doing better then ever. My future aspiration is to become a veterinarian and a world renowned professional vocalist.

I love to sing and dance, read novels of all genres, have fun, watching television and going to the beach with my dog Fluffy. I am a friendly person and love hanging out with friends. I love to make jokes and talk a lot. Italian cuisine is my favorite; especially lasagna and seafood mostly lobster and shrimp.

Finally, as my interesting and informative exposé has come to the end I'd like to thank my family for all their love and support, especially my mother because without her I would not have had the courage to pursue my dreams.

Kevon Moitt
Clare Hall Secondary School

I am 15 year-old Kevon Moitt, representing the Clare Hall Secondary School in Teen Splash 2007, part of Antigua 's 50th Carnival celebrations.

I enjoy visual arts, listening to music, laughing, going out with friends and, most of all, playing the steel pan. When in a group of people, I am usually the "clown", or the one to put a smile on someone's face.

I am the youngest of three siblings and the only boy in my family.
As an active member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church , I was a member of the Sunbeam choir as a young boy, and had the opportunity to travel to Nevis and Anguilla to sing and play pan.  Today, I am a member of the youth choir, the steel orchestra and the youth fellowship.

I have been playing pan since the age of three, and at present, I am a member of the National Youth Steel Orchestra.  Last year, we won the inaugural OECS Pan Competition in Dominica.  I also represented Antigua & Barbuda in Trinidad for Carifesta IX. For the last four years, I have participated in Antigua 's Carnival, first playing with the Gemonites Steel Orchestra, and then with the Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra in the Panorama Competition.
In the 2001 Mr. & Ms. St John's Catholic Primary competition I placed 1st runner up, and this year, I hope to showcase my talents as well as to improve on that performance.

I try to live up to my school's motto, "Striving for Excellence", but as we know, no one's perfect.  But with God's help, I aim to be the best I can be.

Rhea Pluck
Villa Junior Secondary School

My name is Rhea Pluck.  I was born on 16th February 1992 and I am a 9th Grade student at the Villa Junior Secondary School.  The subjects I enjoy most at school are English, Mathematics and Science.

In 2003, I represented Antigua in a Track and Field event in Trinidad.  I was not successful in winning a medal but the experience was priceless.

In 2005, I was awarded the First Runner Up position in the Miss Zodiac Pageant, in which I was judged best in the Performing Talent and Dress Segments.

I would like to pursue a career in Teaching and Nursing, and so, one of these will most likely be the path in which I will follow.

I am a quiet and reserved person by nature, so with God's love and protection I live my life with a smile on my face and a strong determination.

Lakiesha Mack
Clare Hall Secondary School

Beautiful, caring, gorgeous and driven are just some of the adjectives that aptly describe me; fifteen year old Lakiesha Mack, known to many as LaLa. I am the proud representative of the prestigious Clare Hall Secondary School where I take a keen interest in Information Technology, Social Studies, Office Procedures, and Food and Nutrition, just to name a few .

I have two brothers and three sisters and I am a person who greatly believes in looking her best at all times. I live my life everyday inspired by my role model Claudette "CP" Peters because she is a hard working lady who is dedicated to seeing the youths in Antigua and Barbuda have a better life.
She is also a person whom, when called upon, does whatever she has to do to the best of her abilities, which are two qualities that I also possess.
I am a firm believer in the youths of this country and their potential to be people of substance in our society. It is for this reason why I support my fellow peers; I encourage not discourage.

As an individual who loves to socialize, I am very easy to talk to and get along with. I enjoy talking on the phone because I am a great conversationalist who takes communication quite seriously. I also enjoy reading anything on Caribbean History. My favourite book is 'Tragedy on Emerald Island' by S.E. James. Of all my hobbies, singing and playing pan are my passions. As a matter of fact, my greatest accomplishments have been in the steel pan arena, where I started playing at the age of eleven.
By age thirteen, I was entering competitions and travelling around the Caribbean.

In 2004, I began playing in the Antigua and Barbuda Carnival Steel Pan Competition with the Antigua Masonry Products (A.M.P.) Halcyon and the

Victor "Babu" Samuel (V.B.S.) Pan Bassadaz. I have also had the opportunity to represent Antigua and Barbuda at Carifesta in Suriname, as well as Dominica for the O. E. C. S Pan Competition. Additionally, I have been to St Croix and Montserrat during their Carnival celebrations and Trinidad for the ninth Carifesta celebration. Presently, I am a member of the National Youth Pan Orchestra where I play the Double Second steel pan.

Aliana Emerald Crystal Lake
Pares Secondary School

It was on 9th May 1992, that I Aliana Emerald Crystal Lake was ushered into this world on the paradise island of Antigua and was taken to the most peaceful village of all where I now reside, St. Phillips Village.

I completed my primary school education at the TOR Memorial School, and earned a position among the top 70 in the island for the common entrance examination in 2004. I now attend the Pares Secondary School, and delighted they have asked me to represent the school in this year Miss Talented Teen Pageant. My favorite subjects are: Principles of Accounts. Office Administration and Information Technology. These subjects will be help in my future goals of someday earning an Accounting Degree and become a Certified Public Account (CPA).

When I am not in school, I enjoy reading, singing, dancing, driving my family crazy, and most of all hanging out with my best friend, Affianna. To bring about some of these hobbies, I am currently a member of several groups which include: The National Youth Choir, The Big Thinkers at my school, The Young Progressive Achievers, and I am a principal dancer of the Xephorae Dance Theatre, which I have been apart of for approximately 6 years.

My achievements include: Being one of the ten dancers selected to Antigua, along with St. Joseph's Academy's Glee Club, at the showcase in Toronto, Canada in 2005. I was also chosen as a dancer to represent Antigua in a competition in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for an annual Caribbean Dance Competition, where my dance took the winning spot above eight different Caribbean islands in 2006.

However, my proudest achievement was when I was given the honour to represent my country in the annual Carifesta IX. It was dream come true.

Khan Cordice
Antigua Grammar School

My name is Khan Cordice. I am 16 years old, born on the 26th, June 1990. I am the second of four children for my mother who's name is Naomi Isaac. I am a proud Antiguan. I attend the Antigua Grammar School (A.G.S) and I am in fifth form. During my primary years at school, I've always been on top in academics and extra curricula activities. In my primary school examinations, I was top student in my school and in the whole of zone four. Now, at the Antigua Grammar School, I am not just an ordinary student but a "Role Model", as they say, to the pupils that attend the institution.

My favorite hobbies are playing pan, cricket, golf, football (occasionally), listening to music and singing. The ones I love the most are singing and playing pan. I first started to play pan in June 2002 for Antigua's National Panorama Championships with the Cable and Wireless Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra. From that year up until this day, I love pan with a passion. I am aspiring to be a professional steel pan arranger and a musician. I am currently a member of the National Youth Pan Orchestra. We participated in the 2006 OECS Junior Panorama Competition in which we won. We also participated in the 2006 Carifesta held in Trinidad last September in which we captured the eyes and ears of many.

Last October, I entered the Independence Junior solo Competition in which I emerged victorious. It was quite fascinating. I am also the captain of the Antigua Grammar School Steel Orchestra. We entered the Independence School Panorama Competition which we brought home the trophy and the respect of the other schools. And also, the Antigua Grammar School's best five pan players (I am included) took part in the Gemonites Moods of Pan Five Alive competition. We won the school's division and took second runner up in the overall competition against regional bands.

Although I am associated with a lot of pan that's not the only thing I can do, I can also sing.
I first started to sing at primary school in the choir. Before, I sang only on the choir but know I sing everyday and every chance I get. The types of songs I like to sing are mainly slow R&B and love songs. They are just extravagant.
My favorite meal is KFC and I just love ice cream. I also have mad cravings for cheese especially in Doritos.
I enjoy going to school but I just don't know why. I always wonder why and I realized that I love school because when I leave school, I will miss all my friends and all the fun times I had with them and with friends from other schools although sometimes it gets kind of challenging. But that's what makes it so fun.

Life for me, I would say, is very interesting despite all the ups and downs I had but hey! What's life without them?

Tyara Best
Antigua Girls High School

The start of every New Year celebrates the entry of Tyara Best into this world 17 years ago on January 2nd.  So I embrace fresh beginnings and challenges as a regular part of my life.  I love trying new things and making new friends, and am a determined, ambitious and outgoing young woman.

My love for the Performing Arts has been nurtured through playing the piano, singing and dancing, and I am a regular choreographer of my school's cheerleading team.
I strive for excellence in all my academic subjects, especially in my favorite subjects, mathematics, music, craft and home economics.
Being educated at the Foundation Mixed School and the Antigua Girls High School has given me a strong foundation in both church and country.  My favourite motivational quote is 'Through God all things are possible', and I proudly give back to my church as a member of the St John's Cathedral Youth Choir and the Anglican Young Peoples Association.

I believe in developing sound minds AND bodies, so I have participated in the Caribbean Healthy Lifestyle Project for the past three years, and represented Antigua in Netball - my favourite sport - on several occasions.  These include the World Youth Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, the Under 16 Caribbean Tournament in St. Lucia and the Under 23 OECS Championships in St. Vincent & the Grenadines.  I have a highly competitive nature, so it's no surprise that I am also involved in basketball, swimming, tennis and track & field.  Like a good team player, I am always willing to do whatever it takes to see my team excel.

Pageants have held a special fascination for me, and provided me the opportunity to be crowned Miss Interschool Netball Queen 2003 and Miss A.G.H.S Queen of the Forms 2006.

"Consistency creates winners and is a key to success," I always say.   And as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Antigua's Carnival, I hope to repeat my success in this year Teen Splash competition.
