Twenty-four young women took part in the screening process between December 28, 2006 and January 12.
The queen hopefuls went through their paces in a question-and-answer segment, swimwear, modelling, and performing talent before a selection panel that comprised Queen of Carnival Subcommittee Chairperson Josianne Whyte; Fitzroy Carr; Heather Doram; Ladesa James; Latoya Turner; Steve Williams; and Veronica Yearwood.
“I am confident that the girls who have been selected are talented and intelligent, and will help the committee to put on a dynamic and memorable show,” Whyte said.
Doram, meanwhile, had encouraging words for the unsuccessful applicants. “This was one of the more difficult processes, and I was happy to be a part of it. It was a well-put together bunch of articulate, intelligent and talented young ladies – a really tight field. And those who did not make it should walk with confidence and with intentions to try again next year,” Doram said.

July 20th 06 - Rescheduling of Calypso Semi-Finals
P r e s s R e l e a s e
To: All Media Houses
From: Neil Cochrane – CDC Chairman
Date: Thursday 20th July, 2006
Ref: Rescheduling of Calypso Semi-finals
Immediate Release:
The Calypso Semi-finals originally scheduled to take place this Saturday, at Millers By The Sea will be staged on Monday, at 7 pm, at the same venue.
A misunderstanding in communications, during negotiations, between the prospective All-Star Band members and the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) occasioned the postponement.
Talks held today between the CDC and the representatives of the band were amicable, and although negotiations are ongoing, we are certain a resolution acceptable to both sides will be brokered.
There was also a meeting with 15 0f the 18 semi-finalists this afternoon, and all parties were in agreement with the decision to reschedule the second phase of the elimination, to give those artistes who have not yet been rehearsing the chance to adequately do so.
The six calypsonians from Golden Eye Revue who passed Quarter-finals and three from The University of Calypso and Soca have been practising with Jagger Martin’s band.
The All-Star Band will back up the remaining nine, and their rehearsals are slated to begin tomorrow.
We apologise for the inconvenience and will endeavour to ensure that things are executed without hindrance from this point. Again, we are confident that the situation will be resolved to the satisfaction of all involved.

June 28th 06 - Public Notice
To: All Media Houses
From: Neil Cochrane CDC – Chairman
Date: Wednesday 28th June, 2006
Immediate Release:
The Carnival Development Committe wishes to advise the general public that Children’s Melee, the new Carnival Development Committee (CDC) initiative geared at educating and entertaining the youth, has been Postponed until next weekend.
The event was scheduled for this Saturday, at the Botanical Gardens, but has been changed owing to the death of 10-year-old Jemuel Samuel. Children’s Melee, which will have a mini-fair setting, complete with workshops, will now take place on Saturday, July 8, at the Deanery Grounds.
Meanwhile the CDC wishes to set the record straight on two matters making the rounds in the local media, having to do with contention with the steel bands and mas’ makers.
Concerning Panorama, agreement was reached more than one month ago that the bands contesting this year’s event would play the same tune. At that time, the CDC was informed that only one of the seven bands available to compete in this years Panorama was against the proposal to render the test piece, Sylvie Breakaway, by Carl De Pan Man Richards, which was eventually chosen. At the same time, bands that had been on board with the decision began airing concerns after the fact, and Acting President of the Pan Association Joseph Henry requested time for the nascent issues to be resolved at a meeting before making an official announcement of the song.
The CDC has been informed that coming out of that session, only four bands – Gemonites, Hell’s Gate, Mahico Stars and West Side Symphony – remained committed to the one-song agreement. The Pan Association, however, made a case for the show to go on, with the inclusion of the Iron Band competition, similar to last year.
Both the CDC and the Pan Association remain optimistic that the other bands will, eventually, come on board, and they have until Friday, July 7 to signal their intentions to do so. With or without a full complement of the bands, there will be a Panorama, on the night of Thursday, August 3.
The CDC is also pleased to allay fears of a boycott, to be staged by the Mas’ Association, which surfaced in sections of the media this week. For the record, talks between the CDC and the Mas’ Association, aimed at finalising the rules and regulations and prize monies for 2006, resumed about six weeks ago. Three weeks later, the CDC submitted a proposal, at which time discussions were held and changes were made to the prize monies, as agreed by both parties. The representatives of the Mas’ Association asked for time to meet with its general membership before concretizing said changes.
The CDC learnt, like the rest of the public, of an imminent boycott that would span two years in the press this week. We did not respond to the grossly inaccurate reports, as negotiations were ongoing. Both sides have since met, and agreement has been reached.
The CDC is, therefore, pleased to announce that there will be full participation of all the mas’ troupes for this year’s festival. The members of the CDC remain committed to working in partnership will all of the relevant associations, groups and organisations as we get set to celebrate Carnival’s 49th birthday and beyond.

The Ministry of Health, Sports. Youth Affairs and Carnival would like through this medium to extend its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late Clarance Elmes.
Clarance "Uncle or Grand Pa" Elmes as he was affectionately known made tremendous contributions to Antigua Carnival.
For many years, "Elmes" was the pulse of the Calypso Competition as the Master of Ceremony and kept the audience on its feet with his humorous dances, and created much laughter with his jokes.
One can even recall one of his many dance moves while performing which went wrong and resulted in him receiving a broken leg. Even though he broke a leg he continued as if that was part of the act.
Co-ordinator of Carnival, Mr. Vaughn Walter said that he was deeply saddened upon learning of his passing.
He further stated that "Uncle Clarance" was not just a another Carnival Icon and Carnival host but in recognition of his contribution towards the development of Carnival the CDC ensured that his drum was heard by honouring him by making him the Grand Marshall of Carnival in 2001.

ANTIGUA'S CARNIVAL TO AIR ON BET AND THE NEW BET J
NEW YORK (March 15, 2006) -
Antigua and Barbuda's Carnival will resound through the homes of millions of American and Caribbean households this Wednesday, March 15 at 11 p.m. (PST) and Thursday, March 16 at 2 a.m. (EST), and on Sunday, March 19 at 10 p.m. (EST) and 7 p.m. (PST), when top television network, BET airs a half hour special on one of the region's greatest summer festivals.
The airing of the special is the fruit of a marketing partnership between BET Digital Networks, Antigua and Barbuda's Carnival Development Committee and the Ministry of Tourism which portrays the Carnival, as part of the culture, history and beauty of the twin-island nation.
The partnership with BET has given the islands extensive publicity, including no less than 350 thirty-second spots between channels, 15 five-second billboards in addition to the 30-minute special premiering this week.
The upcoming special is being promoted on BET with "pop-up" ads and a promotional spot to boost viewers.
"BET delivers much greater value than our own expenditures could maintain," said Neil Cochrane, Chairman of the Antigua Carnival Development Committee. "This approach to marketing the annual summer festival harmonizes with the Ministry of Tourism's drive to make Antigua and Barbuda one of the best brands in Caribbean tourism, and our festival one of the region's preferred," he added.
After Antigua signed the deal with BET Digital Networks, BET Jazz re-launched the channel, re-naming it BET J so it is now connected to twice as many households in the US alone.
The channel is positioned next to MTV and BET on Direct TV in the US, which positions it even better to reach the attention of millions of viewers in the US. The value of the airtime promised to Antigua has increased significantly since this deal was done last year. The program will rebroadcast on the new BET J a minimum of 12 times, following the broadcast on BET.
"Our 2005 partnership with Antigua and Barbuda was a great success, but this year it will be even greater," said Cybelle Brown, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for BET Digital Networks. "This year we will integrate a "106 and Park" promotion into our deal along with a host of new cross promotional activities. And, with BET J presenting "Island Lime" day on Saturdays, Antigua will be one of the first to be a major part of the new line-

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Antigua & Barbuda, and, by extension, Carnival will benefit immensely from an advertising and marketing initiative with BET and BET Jazz (now BET J), undertaken by the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) last year and which the CDC is in the process of renegotiating.
In 2005, the CDC,, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, spent US $200,000 with the American media outfit, which reaches approximately 89 million households in North America alone.
The advertising campaign provided 350 30-second spots between the channels, 15 five-second billboards and a 20-minute programme on Antigua & Barbuda, featuring highlights of Carnival along with other attractions of the twin-island state.
The value of the initiative, not just for Carnival but also for the country, far exceeds the monies expended.
In fact, after the signing with BET Networks, BET Jazz re-launched, as BET J, and is now accessed by twice as many households in the United States.
The channel is positioned next to MTV and BET on Direct TV in the US, and is even better positioned to reach millions of viewers in the US. The value of the airtime promised to Antigua & Barbuda has increased significantly since this deal was sealed last year.
Additionally, BET J and BET have penetrated the Caribbean, which means neighboring countries will view the advertisements and the program. While BET J is not seen in Antigua, it is on basic cable in Anguilla, Bermuda, Grenada, Jamaica, St Lucia, Trinidad and other countries.
Naturally, the spin-off, specifically increased visitor arrival for Carnival and at other times, will manifest over a protracted period, beginning this year.
This approach to marketing the annual summer festival is in harmony with the tourism technocrats' drive to make Antigua & Barbuda the best brand in Caribbean tourism. We add, too, that our initiative is in keeping with the current trend in festival tourism utilized by our neighbors, in Anguilla, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Jamaica, St Kitts, St Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago, who have formed successful alliances, with the same company, to promote their respective events.
As we approach our 50th anniversary, we urge patience and rationale reasoning as we work to return Antigua's summer festival to the pride of place it once occupied.
Recently, contributors to the various radio call-in programs have suggested that we spent US $200,000 for a 20-minute show. That is a misunderstanding of the venture and we trust that this statement clears up the misconceptions.
